Notification - Request sent to 777 regarding Vanders Objects

Postby SYN_Matthias » Mon Nov 25, 2013 4:11 pm

Good morning, just wanted to provide notification to you all that the following email was sent today to 777 Studios and Jason , and I intend to resend it every week until I get a response. I highly encourage others to also email 777 and Jason with this request if they support it.

---------------------------

Jason and 777 Studios,

I'm a pilot with Jasta 5 and a mission/campaign designer for both Bloody April 3 and the upcoming Bloody April 4. For some time now you've been hosting several model packages made by SYN_Vander commonly referred to as "Vanders Objects" on the Rof Mods page. These packages of new models include some very welcome additions for mission builders such as horse drawn ammunition, a working sea trawler, infantry, and placeable trenches, not to mention all the other "eye candy" objects like static aircraft and such.

But we've noticed a somewhat disturbing problem with these mods which we feel is negatively impacting the community. Builders on servers like Syndicate and New Wings are including models from Vander into their missions. Both of these servers are the most frequented servers playing "standard" style missions as opposed to "fast food" style servers like Flying Circus.

New players and even some veteran players are unaware of these object mod packages and so they are getting kicked from servers when those new objects spawn or are in active use on the map. In some cases, this has caused server population to drop by more than half when these "kicks" occur. Those kicked usually seem to go back to fast food or we fear may "give up" on the game due to game crashing they simply don't understand.

Now yes it is partially the mission builders fault for including those new objects which are causing the problem, but a lot of people just don't understand how to do something like install the JGSME tool or the mod packages. However the additional possibilities for missions and campaigns that those new objects provide is undeniable - those things are highly beneficial to have for the ROF community. I mean just think about what that means to a mission builder to be able to put in their own trenches with infantry, or add armed trawlers as escorts to a damaged sub or freighters in a Channel convoy - those are HUGE game changers that really add to the realism!

Therefore, I officially request on behalf of Jasta 5 and really all ROF mission builders that Vanders objects be removed from the ROF Mods page and be incorporated into the main ROF package as part of the standard product in a patch before April of 2014 - just like DiFis Island Map was. I know you're on a tight schedule with all of the development work on BOS, but Jasta 5 intends to use these objects for this and all future Jasta 5 campaigns, and we know other groups would like to do the same. Many campaigns are already requiring them. It would be very nice for all of us to not have to chase after people to get the mods installed and highly beneficial for the rest of the community to not have to go through that hassle in order to reap the benefits of Vanders efforts to flush out the static objects available in ROF.

I appreciate your time and eagerly await your response,

Matt Campbell

P.S. Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter release also in time for Bloody April 4 please! ;-)

Yes Baumer and others in J5 (myself included) have verified that the lack of certain models from those packages do cause crashes for some players. Not only have I actually been on TS with players that could not connect to our server running missions with those objects and then walked them through the mod install process which resloved the issue, but we've actually had members in New Wings when one of those objects was either spawned or was damaged (thus causing the model to graphically change or catch fire?) when an airfield got bombed and "boom" they and half the server population got kicked. Again, those with the mods installed had no issue.

Off the top of my head these specifically I know have crashed J5 members (aka they could not connect into the server) when objects were not installed on their machine / turned off:
horse drawn artillery/carts
armed trawler
trenches - not sure if with or without infantry matters

There may be others.

Objects that definitely do not appear to cause crashes:
At least some of the static pile of crates/box models
some of the static planes

(sorry I have not taken the time to figure out exactly which ones are ok - I just know for a while way back I was running SYN vintage missions that had airfields with eyecandy without the mods and was OK)

Hi Matthias,

I''ll drop Jason an d loft an email and request that they can be included in RoF because of the reason you have stated.
Only the static objects can be used in missions -and then even without entity- if you allow players to join without the mods.

Hope they respond soon and that it can be included in the Strutter release. I think the objects have been tested enough now? :)

Vander,

Many thanks for yours and others efforts in the construction of all these objects. Frankly, these deserve to be in the standard game - even though I can somehow run my plane through a pile of crates without damage... (FYI to all - you can also run a seaplane right through the "rocky shoals" objects from the Channel Map without damage so 777 does the same thing with some of their terrain eye candy)

I admit I'm puzzled as to why exactly some of them appear to cause crashing and others do not. But as you say, as a community we've tested them long enough and they've propogated across the community to such a degree that I think it is a MUST that they be patched directly into ROF. We must try to avoid at all costs what occured in Red Baron with all the custom mods splitting up the community and hindering new players from getting into the game.

I know for sure that if you use only objects without entity than there is no problem. When you use objects with entity (and vehicles, soldiers/firing points NEED an entity) then there will be problems for the client that doesn't have the objects installed.

Email sent to Jason & Loft...let's see what their response is!

Any word on this Vander?

If not, I'm going to mail them a friendly reminder.

Yeah I emailed both Jason & Loft. Jason said he would take it up with Loft in their next meeting. Haven't heard since (two weeks?) so a reminder may help.

Hey Vander did you ever hear anything back on this?

Your original static objects mod packs have been removed from the ROF site, but I didn't see any notifications that your mods got added to the core game? So at this point it appears people can no longer download those essential files... :???:
