DBS Bomber Practice

Postby TH0R » Wed Feb 01, 2012 3:56 pm

Hi guys, it has been a while since I last visited your forum. Nice place you have going on here.

In case you haven't noticed my posts on public forums like 1C or SimHQ, I am also posting it here. With 4.11 fixing many issues we had with the game, our little Dedicated Bomber Squadron flies again, and we are set to start organizing series of dedicated Missions with DBS in the driver seat. The concept is called Weekly Dedicated Mission and is intended to run every 14 days, on Sunday evening to accommodate for our US pilots.

Right now we are in the process of organizing Bombing Practice events and building maps. Naturally, all Missions will feature historical plane sets and more or less historical scenarios with proper skins to go along with. Once we have enough pilots and 3-4 maps done (and tested for rotation) we will start off with the Missions. So far we had one Bomber Practice, from which you can check out screenshots HERE.

EDIT / UPDATE: We now have a all in one thread about every DBS activity: [CALENDAR] DBS activities.

If you have never heard of DBS, here are a couple of links that will tell you more about us:

And last but not least, Letum and I are now teaching anyone interested in how to fly formation (similar to what he is doing in RoF). Details HERE.

Hi Thor!...long time no see. Really glad to see you are getting this up and running again. The only thing that will hold us back from attending is the fixture itself. We run our weekly "Vintage mission" on a Sunday which menas we have got to be around for that.

I will have a quick gander at the schedule and see if there is a way that we can do both periodically.

It is a fantastic event and with all of us flying IL2 aswell it would be great to attend. See you soon, m8

Good to see you too! Back when I was flying RoF we frequently flew on your server. Top notch server if I may say so.

Unfortunately, we have to fly on Sundays to accommodate for our US members (e.g. Monguse and Magnum). But, the main change with these Missions will the the way they are built and run. We intend run them for 3-4 hours with the half of the flight distance when compared to the previous Mega Missions. This way we hope to guarantee 2 if not up to 4 sorties per night. Which translates into the possibility to join late in the Mission when some pilots are bound to leave etc. Not only will we extend the Mission length but keep the pilot number high throughout the Mission and give squadrons like The Syndicate and 242th (lewi's squad) the chance to join late in the Mission.

The first Mission is still some weeks away, and we will be running them every 2 weeks as I previously mentioned.

I will be informing you guys all in proper time when we have the events prepared. Right now, we are looking for bomber pilots. :)

I will have a rummidge around and see who i can get enthusiastic about bombers. Which ones in particular?...and do they need high level of experience in bombing from alt or is it a "drop on my bombs" kinda deal?.

We are more of a fighter Sqn at this stage but cld possibly field a couple of bombers....

No pre-required skills what so ever. Just a will to learn and have fun. :)

The only requirement we have for anyone wishing to join DBS is to know how to fly formation - and we offer to teach and share our experiences with anyone interested. For this reason I posted various links in the first post here (about Bomber Practice events etc.)

I am fully aware that you guys are more a fighter jocks and it would be a pleasure to have you gents escorting us, but there just may be a bomber pilot or two lurking amongst your ranks. You never know. :)

The tactics are same as before, we fly as a group and bomb as a group. It is down to the Squadron and Element leaders to operate the bombsight, and for the rest to drop on their (Sq. leader's) command. This is usually done in the way that even if all bombers are shot down, once we are on the bomb run the accurate angle for the bombsight is given over TS. More so, we will be running low lever strafer missions together with dive bombing and torpedo ones (i.e. Battle of Midway). So it is not all about level bombing, but more about operating as a group and knowing the procedures and how to fly formation. Again, no skills are required. We will teach you everything and I have already posted a few "how to" threads / guides (e.g. Fundamentals of Formation Flying).

Also, you may wish to try and attack us on these Practice events. On the 1st Practice we had 10-12 Bombers and 5-6 attackers and it was a blast (there is a link in the first post with screenshots). 4-5 guys were completely new as to bombing with us, and after short briefing they flew and held formation with us in no time.

To say that we have big plans for this is an understatement, more like setting the bar even higher time. And I would like to include major and popular squadrons on this, like The Syndicate, 242nd, 352nd I even have contacts with French and Italian squadrons... Slowly but steadily we are building this around Battle-Fields 3 server which is now completely at our disposal and serves as a bomber oriented server. Right now it is 36 slot, and we hope to switch it to a 64 slot server once the Missions start to fly and we have a solid player base.

Well...you can count on us in whichever capacity :P

P.S. meant to ask....are we to assume this is full switch?....hate those externals :(

P.P.S. is BF3 full switch aswell?....we are looking for somewhere to call home :P

So do I. Full switch as far as we can make it. :)

With one exception and that is own plane icon - it is impossible to lead the formation and navigate at the same time.

When not running large Events, we stick to normal BFs rules. Here are the full Mission rules (for Events only) and difficulty settings we will use:

http://www.battle-fields.com/commscentr ... sion-Rules

On Bomber Practice Events we use (friendly only) externals in order to check how other pilots are doing (holding their position etc.).

So far we have only one map in rotation, and once HSFX is ready for 4.11 we will maximize the use of new and improved maps. Here is the one Mission we can not currently run due to HSFX not being ready for 4.11:

http://www.battle-fields.com/commscentr ... No-18-(NEI)-squadron-RAAF-map

We are also looking for talented map makers. If you guys are really interested, I welcome any help we can get.

Blimey, just got used to finger of four in ROF, this looks like its a fair bit more complicated and loads of manuals etc. Looks very organised Thor, we will have to investigate further.

Compared to IL2, formation flying in RoF is at least twice as hard. In RoF you have slow planes that bounce around in the wind and turbulence whilst in IL2 planes fly as if on rails due to their speed and stability. More importantly in IL2 you have trim = much easier. DBS will gladly demonstrate just how easy it is when you know the fundamental rules and what to look out for. Formation flying as such is only needed if you want to fly bombers, for a fighter slot there is no requirement. :)

As for the overall organization, as Jed and Nightshifter will tell you since they participated in some of the previous Missions, the teamwork is and always was on a very high level. Bomber pilots and escorts in their own TS channels with whispers set between them etc. All the bells and whistles and this will be no different.
