Is this something I need to get involved with? It seems a bit complex, have I missed the boat on benefits of joining in early?

If its like elite and I can fly about the galaxy bothering people then Im probably all for it.

Can we gang up like a mob of space pirates?

Yes and yes!

Oh and there is also a sequel to Elite, called Elite Dangerous, in the works:

Yes, yes, and defo YES!

Space combat from whatever perspective you desire (baddies or lawful), merchant, salvage, exploration, ..., as well as first person boarding party combat, and a few whole planet combat free-for-alls just like Planetside. It is going to be massive, but will not happen all at once bbut released in stages, since the whole thing has been crowd funded there are no producers making business decisions. Its all about the game (if the hype is to be completely believed).

There are a handful of us Flashy who supported during the kickstarter phase and thus have certain benefits. One is free lifetime insurance on our ships (otherwise you have to pay for insurance in game credits). If you lose your ship to space piracy, a meteor strike, or you navigate into a black hole, then the basic ship is replaced BUT not all your upgrades since day one. We have many different ships already in the squad, from the most basic single seat scout, to long-haul merchants, to a biggish 4 crew twin turret (and drop fighter) equipped beast called the Constellation. Check out the offerings here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ship-specs
and then the pricing here https://robertsspaceindustries.com/store/products/newbackers.

We can buy a ship for you (save a bit of real money as well), then gift it to your account and you will have some of these kickstarter perks.

Let me know, as Haash said, I did it for him just yesterday all via Paypal, and it only cost $2 and change for the extra transaction. If you want to pass along your own Paypal account info (and change your password after), then that would cut out two extra steps.
Lest we forget...

There is a 'competition' of sorts for the next great SC starship https://robertsspaceindustries.com/contest/the-next-great-starship
About the contest

Creating ultra-detailed spaceships is the heart of Star Citizen’s development. From concept to final texturing, a ship can take teams of expert designers months to create the level of graphical fidelity and detail that have become hallmarks of the Star Citizen universe. Now Chris Roberts and his team of visual designers are looking to the community for the next great team of ship designs.

16 Finalist teams exit one by one until there is one Grand Prize winner honored with the addition of their spaceship into Chris Roberts’ new space epic, Star Citizen. Not to mention a $30,000 cash prize, a swag of other goodies and the first winning ships off the production press for each team members’ Hangar!

Whether or not you participate, subscribe to RSI’s YouTube channel to watch the drama unfold and see who can build Star Citizen’s Next Great Starship. The weekly webcast show will kick off with sixteen finalist teams at 11am PST on January 31st 2014, which is when the specs will be released to each team for the main challenge; The Next Great Spaceship!

These sixteen teams of finalists will have to conceptualize, design, model, animate and rig their model while submitting their progress for weekly review by a panel of science fiction’s leading concept artists, designers and celebrities, along with the man himself, Chris Roberts.

Each successful challenge, takes you one step closer to the grand prize. Failure means you go ‘home’. In the end, the last two teams will be flown to Los Angeles to compete live in front of the judges and the community on June 8 2014, for the grand prize: $30,000 ...

Below is a chart listing various options if you still have not pledged. Some of these I haven't been able to find on the website...

I shall have a good look at all this when I get some spare time. I am interested, especially in some squad based shennanigans. In space.

Thanks for the clarifications guys! Will probably have to wait next month to invest some money in it. Definitely interested in the option of going with one of you original backers to have some extra advantages, sure life insurance sounds pretty good :)
