In game voice comms/chat working

Postby SYN_Blackrat » Fri Feb 13, 2015 8:39 am

It was cool to talk to Vander and Per last night in game, even cooler was the back ground hisses, whistles and crackles as the signal travelled over the FTL comms link through interstellar space, with authentic roger beeps too.

Sounded like NASA talking to the moon landings very atmospheric.

I like it too. The interface is a but awkward, but it's a great feature for ad-hoc communications!

But did they model realistic transmission delay?

So, how does it work? Is it an open channel where anyone can jump on, even if they aren't in the area? Or is it a 'regional' channel, say for a certain system? That would get out of hand for the number of systems I've heard ED has ...

Shouldn't there be some distance limit though? Even Star Trek Voyager couldn't phone home...

Seriously?

If there was a distance delay what would be the point of in game comms? I was 235 light years away from Vander!

Its a private channel, but I understand there is system channels, never worried about that though.

If we accepted that they discovered traveling faster then the speed of light. Some interstellar transmission wouldn't be hard to imagine..don't you agree Bandy?

Interface is a bit awkward but not totally bonkers. The guys called me and wouldn't stop so I had to find out how it works on the fly to not seem totally noobish. I managed to finally answer and talk some to the guys. It's quite cool.

Sure, I was just pulling Blackie's leg. Besides, there is always the aspect of players' game needs. I get that...

RE: Interstellar Transmission
Actually, I love the exploration of altered consciousness Frank Herbert revealed to us in Dune, the pilots of the ships going into a trance to navigate at that speed, the Bene Gesserit witches, etc. The mind is the true final frontier. Think about what an idea is, creativity in general. Ever make an idea into reality?

I mean without purchasing something...
